Questions
How many custom-exempt plants does South Dakota have?
8 establishments in South Dakota carry the flag in the FSIS directory of 2026-09-01, in 7 counties. Each is listed with its establishment number so you can verify it at FSIS.
What does the custom-exempt flag mean?
Establishments that report custom-exempt slaughter or processing to FSIS under 9 CFR 303.1. A custom-exempt plant can process an animal the customer already owns, a whole, half or share bought before slaughter, and returns it in packages marked Not for Sale. This is the list behind every half-cow purchase.
Are state-inspected plants included?
No. This list is federal grants of inspection only. South Dakota also runs a state meat inspection program whose plants can sell within the state; the state agency keeps that list, and the South Dakota buying guide explains how the two systems fit together.
